“BREW FREE! OR DIE IPA is brewed with some serious west coast attitude. This aromatic golden IPA starts with a sucker punch of six different hops to the nose, quickly balanced by a solid malt backbone. Our top selling beer at the pub, this IPA starts big and finishes clean leaving you wanting more.” 7.0% ABV
Poured from a 12 oz can into a tulip glass. The color is honey-golden and clear. A huge bubbly/frothy head is poured, ample carbonation is visible, and good lacing is left on the glass. I did notice some white chunky business hanging out in the bottom of my glass (as pictured above on the right), and was careful to avoid that while drinking.
Fresh citrus zest consisting of lemons, grapefruits, and passion fruit juice. There is also some floral hops, with an underlying malt sweetness.
Medium mouth-feel, and very smooth going down. There is some initial bitterness on the tongue after swallowing, but nothing overwhelming for the style. The flavors follow the nose nearly identically, with more smooth, sweet malts coming through as it warms. It finishes clean and slightly dry, without much lingering flavor (just light lemon/citrus and bitterness).
Brew Free! Or Die IPA seems like a good starter IPA for the inexperienced IPA drinker. None of the flavors are overly bold, and the bitterness seems much less than the labeled 70 IBUs. The flavors, while light, are done pretty well, and mix together decently. It definitely is more drinkable to the average palate than the Stone IPA. Overall, a 7/10.
