Sierra Nevada Kellerweis

From the Brewery: DSC_0407

“Kellerweis is one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. This difficult and labor-intensive technique adds uncommon depth and flavor complexity. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl and pour the rest.” 4.8% ABV

The Pour: DSC_0408

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into my wheat beer glass. The color is a hazy golden yellow, with a white bubbly head. There is a little visible carbonation, as well as minimal lacing left on the glass.

The Nose: DSC_0409

Sweet yeasty characteristics, faint banana, and citrus/spice notes.

The Mouth: DSC_0411

The mouthfeel is medium-thick and has a rich, thick texture. A faint amount of hop bitterness comes through after going down. The flavors match the nose nearly identically, matched with some typical wheat beer graininess in the aftertaste.

Final Thoughts: DSC_0410

Kellerweis’ incredibly rich, velvety mouthful and refreshing nature are its standout features. The flavor profile is also pretty solid, though slightly subdued, making this a quality wheat beer that should be tried by any fan of the style. I wouldn’t have any trouble reaching for this brew again. 8/10
