Tioga-Sequoia Sugar Pine Cocoa-Vanilla Porter

From the Bottle: DSC_0380 (2)

“Sugar Pine is a robust American porter flavored with organic cacao nibs and Madagascar vanilla beans. Chocolate and roasted malts are the back bone of this beer and compliment the vanilla and cocoa flavors perfectly. Our porter captures the essence of a dark craft beer you’ll love to enjoy by a campfire or with dessert. Cheers!” 5.5% ABV

The Pour: DSC_0381 (2)

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into my nonic. Sugar Pine is mostly black in color, with some ruby-red opaqueness around the edges. The head poured is dark tan and frothy. Good lacing is left on the glass throughout.

The Nose: DSC_0382

Sweet, chocolaty roasted malts, with undertones of vanilla liqueur.

The Mouth: DSC_0384

Thick and hearty going down, finishes moderately dry with some bitterness. The initial flavor going down is of general malt sweetness. The aftertaste of roasted chocolate malt is complimented by hints of vanilla and smoke, and coat the palate quite well. There is also a trace of alcohol flavor present, peculiar for a relatively small beer.

Final Thoughts: DSC_0383

I really appreciate the brewery for not making this a “gimmick” style flavored beer. Instead, the chocolate and vanilla flavor the traditional porter with subtlety and care. The secondary flavors blend well and complement each other, rather than seeming forced for the sake of a flavored beer. Not the best porter I’ve ever head, but definitely wouldn’t mind another bottle in the future. 7/10
